Things to Consider When Purchasing a Classic Jaguar

While classic cars may lack the modern conveniences we rely on for a comfortable ride, there’s something special about owing a prestigious piece of automotive history. Packed with style and charm, classic cars, especially Jaguars, ooze sophistication and stand out from the crowd of modern vehicles guaranteeing you plenty of attention and conversation from onlookers. At Roadbend Motors, we are passionate about Jaguars of all makes and models but we know investing in a classic car is not a decision to make lightly. Here’s a few things to consider to make sure your classic car purchase is a wise investment for you.

Choose Your Model Carefully

Jaguar has a longstanding reputation of designing superior quality vehicles built for the ultimate in performance, style and comfort and over the years has kept its highly desirable cars in production for a long time, continuously refining them to make them the best they can be. Because of this, whether you fancy an E Type, a Mark 2 or a XJ saloon, there are endless variations of specification, engine size and finish to choose from. Due to the sheer choice of models and their desirability by classic car enthusiasts, there is a large variance in prices between models. If it doesn’t bother you to have the most desirable version, then you may be able to grab a bargain. Less desirable models of the same car can be half the price of more popular models, but are in no way inferior.

Consider a Less Familiar Model

The E Type and Mark 2 are incredibly popular, and for good reason, however these models can overshadow the other equally great but less familiar classic Jaguars. There’s the 1960s MkX, S-Type, XJ-Coupe, Daimler 250 V8 and XJ-S which are all exceptional cars, and in some cases may actually be better than their more popular cousins.  If you prefer something unique, consider seeking out one of these models.

Check the History

Take your time to look into the history of the vehicle you are looking to purchase. Check the car’s log book or history file, it’s worth paying a little extra for a maintained file. When checking the history look for signs of continuous servicing and maintenance and regular use. Cars that have been laid up for long periods are likely to have deteriorated and this may not always be easy to spot.  Where the car has been repaired or renovated check that this has been done by a reputable specialist.

Be Practical

Jaguars are generally not cheap cars to buy or own. While you may be able to afford the price on the tag, rare or old parts won’t be cheap, mechanics experienced in classic cars often charge a premium and insurance may cost a small fortune. Some models may also have particular idiosyncrasies that may affect your enjoyment of ownership, for example small doors, low roofs and heavy steering.  You need to keep this in mind when considering what car to buy, and also ask yourself whether buying a classic car is the right choice for you.

Consider a Modern Classic Jaguar

In the 80s and 90s, Jaguar improved its quality and invested in new models and today, some of these more recent cars are extremely undervalued and offer excellent value for money, considering their general reliability. Many of these models can be picked up at a relatively affordable price with plenty of remaining life.

No matter which classic model you choose, Jaguar ownership is hugely rewarding. There are few cars that turn heads like a Jag, and few classic car clubs have the scale and social interaction of the Jaguar clubs. Before you take the plunge into classic car ownership take the time to do your research, owning a classic car can be a wise investment if done properly.
